Success for the hackathon on smart-building organised by Dalkia and Intent Technologies

Around one hundred entrepreneurs, developers, engineers and designers came together this weekend at Usine IO in Paris to take part in a race against the clock: Dalkia and its partner, Intent Technologies, gave participants 48 hours to come up with new applications for building stakeholders. Teams were competing to win a prize of €15,000 and the chance to join a project incubator. The five prototype apps chosen by the jury will be developed into genuine finished products over the next two months.

The hackathon co-organised by Dalkia and Intent Technologies to design innovative new apps for building stakeholders—including connected residents, caretakers, landlords, joint owners and technicians—began on the evening of February 5. After a short welcome speech and an introductory presentation by mentors from Dalkia, Intent Technologies and, around 30 project leaders briefly outlined their ideas and pitched their projects to around one hundred attending participants to convince people with relevant profiles to join their team. Work then began in earnest, backed by customised coaching sessions, presentations of worthy start-ups, round-the-clock tech support for mobile/web development and design, and, most importantly, guidance from mentors throughout the weekend. 

Thanks to 70 active participants, 15 of the 19 projects pitched at the start of the weekend had taken shape in time to be presented to an initial jury on Sunday afternoon, which shortlisted nine for submission to the final jury. Five winning projects were then chosen by the Grand Jury to join Dalkia's E-Residents Incubator to put the finishing touches to successful prototypes. 

The winning teams offer promising solutions to optimise building management. Whether addressing the needs of tenants or building managers, the five prototypes could bring real value to enhance existing systems and functions: 

  1. Game of Energy is a roleplaying app that encourages tenants to save energy and compare their buildings' energy use to that of others. 
  2. Command is a quick-and-simple automated solution to manage relations between tenants, managers and maintenance teams by SMS. The solution is cost-effective and easy to introduce since it requires neither a high-speed connection nor a specific application.
  3. Haru is a small robot that can collect data on household air quality, temperature, humidity, light and noise and deliver customised advice on how to improve home comfort and security while cutting energy bills.
  4. AtHome is an app that encourages mutual support among people living in the same building by allowing them to check and create news about their building. It covers data on temperature, humidity and electricity consumption, along with information on power failures, updates on work being carried out and more.
  5. Sénova is an app that provides diagnostics and advice allowing maintenance technicians to interact with residents to gain feedback on their comfort, identify any problems they may have and offer immediate solutions. 

A special award for the best hack with respect to development quality was presented on Sunday evening to OmniWatts, which offers residents tips on how to improve their energy consumption. The prototype apps joining the incubator will be completed in the next two months through an online immersion programme for "e-residents" with the support of mentors from Dalkia and Intent Technologies. The remaining €12,000 will be split at the end of the incubation phase, with the winning project receiving €6,000. Dalkia will organise an in-house competition allowing employees to vote for their favourite project among the nine initially submitted to the Grand Jury.

The hackathon has helped to accelerate the digital transformation across an entire sector through an open platform and a growing community of developers focused on smart buildings.
