Smart buildings incorporate digital solutions into building operations to optimise energy consumption and enable interaction with the building's ecosystem.

Smart buildings can be adapted to internal actors, i.e. the occupants, to provide new services designed to enhance comfort, foster closer ties between different stakeholders (occupants, landlords, operators, etc.) and empower all involved to play an active part in energy management.

Smart buildings can also be adapted to external actors by incorporating local energy networks (electricity, heating and cooling). They can send data to external networks to communicate specific requirements, particularly in terms of energy. Smart buildings dovetail with smart grids (especially smart thermal grids), which are an integral part of the smart city concept.
